As imported confectionary stores opened in Korea , some industrial products began to come into the country, and were then distributed to large supermarkets and convenience stores such as E-Mart.

In Taiwan, pineapples are also called Peng Li (鳳梨) and Ong Lai (王梨). As the name suggests, Peng Li Su means “pineapple jam (酥)” and the word Ong Lai means “prosperity” and “fertility.” Because it has a similar pronunciation to Ong Lai (旺來), it is said that pineapple is often served at weddings and festivals in Taiwan.

There are a few well-known products such as Soobang, Chiadeo, Sooncheong, and Sunny Hill. I know how bad it must be if sweets don't taste good, but if you hear about them , they really don't taste good.[2] It is good to buy known products. Especially if it's a gift.

It may come as a surprise, but there is almost no pineapple in the commonly eaten Pineapple.[3] The main ingredients are Donga and sugar , and only a little bit of pineapple flavor is added to it. This is because if you use only 100% pineapple, the sour taste will be strong and the price will be more expensive than anything else. Penglisu, which contains only pineapple, is called 土鳳梨酥.[4]

In addition to pineapple, other fruit jams are also used. In this case, the name is changed to something like the Chinese name of the fruit + 酥.[5]

대만어로 옹라이(王梨, 파인애플)는 옹라이(旺來, 번영, 다산)와 발음이 비슷하여 대만에서는 결혼식이나 축제에서 파인애플을 자주 올린다고 한다.

수신방, 치아더, 순청, 써니힐 등 알려진 제품이 몇 개 있다. 과자가 맛없으면 얼마나 맛없겠냐만 듣보잡이면 정말 맛이 없기 때문에[3] 알려진 제품을 구매하는 것이 좋다. 특히 선물하는 것이라면 더더욱.

의외일 수 있는데, 일반적으로 먹는 펑리수에는 파인애플이 거의 들어 있지 않다.[4] 주재료는 동아와 설탕이며 이것에 파인애플맛이 살짝 날 정도만 첨가한다. 정말 100% 파인애플만 사용할 경우에는 신맛이 강하게 나게 되고 무엇보다 가격이 비싸지기 때문이다. 파인애플만 들어 있는 펑리수는 土鳳梨酥라고 따로 칭한다.[5]

파인애플 말고도 다른 과일 잼을 쓰기도 한다. 이 경우 과일의 중국식 이름+酥 같은 식으로 이름이 바뀐다.[6]

#Pineapple cake (Chinese: 鳳梨酥; pinyin: fènglísū; Taiwanese Hokkien: 王梨酥 ông-lâi-so͘) is a Taiwanese sweet traditional pastry and dessert containing butter, flour, egg, sugar, and pineapple jam or slices.

Both pineapple cake and pineapple tart likely came into fruition around the 16th century when the pineapple, a fruit native to South America, was introduced by Portuguese merchants to the region.[2] Around this time, the Portuguese established a presence in places such as Malacca, Singapore and Taiwan, which they referred to as now archaic name "Formosa" for the island.[3]
During the Japanese colonial era, the pineapple fruit became a critical component of Taiwan's economy during which Japanese industrialists imported a wide variety of pineapple cultivars and established numerous processing plants.[4]
By the late 1930s, Taiwan had become the third-largest exporter of pineapples in the world.[4] However, when pineapple production in Taiwan shifted toward domestic sales and use of fresh pineapple, local bakeries sought to use this surplus in pastries.[5] While pineapple cakes had historically been produced as a ceremonial food, a combination of governmental promotion and globalization popularized the pineapple cake. Pineapple cakes have become one of the top-selling souvenirs in Taiwan.[6]
Since 2005, the Taipei City Government has run an annual Taipei Pineapple Cake Cultural Festival to foster the growth the local tourism industry and promote sales of the pineapple cake.[7][8] In 2013, the revenue from Taiwan's pineapple cake bakeries totaled NT$40 billion (US$1.2 billion), and sales of pineapple cakes have also bolstered agricultural economies in rural parts of the country.[9][5]


In Taiwanese Hokkien, "pineapple" (王梨; ông-lâi) sounds similar to a phrase meaning "to come forth, prosperous and thriving" (旺來; ōng-lâi).[10] This phrase conveys the hope that many children will be born to the family. As a result, pineapple cakes are often given as engagement gifts, or simply as well-wishing presents in an everyday context.[citation needed] Today, pineapple cake is considered one of Taiwan's culinary symbols.


Contemporary pineapple cake bakeries have created variations on the traditional pineapple cake. The filling may also incorporate preserved egg yolks or other dried fruits such as cranberries or strawberries.[12]
Bakeries may also add winter melon to the pineapple jam. This practice was initially an effort to make the tart pineapple filling more palatable.[citation needed] However, in contemporary bakeries, adding winter melon to the filling may be seen as an indicator of lower quality.[9]
The annual Taipei Pineapple Cake Cultural Festival often features a contest in which bakeries compete to create pineapple cakes that incorporate unconventional ingredients, such as rice or Taiwanese tea.


The outer skin of traditional pineapple cake is made of lard, but today, butter is more commonly used. The filling is mostly made of pineapple mixed with winter melon. [13] In recent years, many merchants have used pure pineapple to make fillings. Although its taste is not as dense and soft as the winter melon filling, the unique and rich fruity flavor with such sweet and sour taste of pure pineapple filling are incomparable with winter melon filling.
