The pterostigma (plural: pterostigmata) is a group of specialized cells in the outer wings of insects, which are often thickened or coloured, and thus stand out from other cells. It is particularly noticeable in dragonflies, but present also in other insect groups, such as snakeflies, hymenopterans, and megalopterans. It is also often referred to as a stigma.[1]

 

The pterostigma, a heavier section of the wing than nearby sections, assists in gliding. Without the pterostigmata, self-exciting vibrations known as flutter would set in on the wing above a certain critical speed, making gliding impossible. Tests show that with the pterostigmata, the critical gliding speed is increased 10–25% on one species of dragonfly.[2]

 

날개는 몇 줄기의 검은 혈림프관이 세로를 따라 길게 끝까지 지나가는 사이로 여러 개의 짧은 혈림프관이 가로로 얽혀 있다.[12] 가슴에서 시작된 근육은 날개 중간의 혈림프관이 가까이 모여 지나가는 결절(nodus)까지 이어져 날개를 움직이고, 날개 끝에는 검은 네모 모양의 연문(pterostigma)이 있다.[5] 실잠자리 날개는 투명한 것이 많지만 색이나 무늬가 있는 날개를 가진 것들도 있다. 암수의 날개 색상이 다른 경우도 있다.[13] 실잠자리는 앉아서 쉴 때 날개를 접는데 청실잠자리과만은 잠자리처럼 앉을 때에도 날개를 펴둔다.

Pterostigma

The pterostigma is a dark pigmented spot on the leading (front) edge of the wings of some species of insect. The spot is towards the wing tip and often stands out due to its colouration.

Experiments have shown that the pterostigma, being heavier than surrounding areas of the wing, helps the insect when gliding. In particular the pterostigma reduces vibrations within the wing.

 

The pterostigma is present in the fore and hind wings of dragonflies and damselflies. Other insects have pterostigmas in their fore wings such as some hymenoptera and neuroptera.

pterostigma는 일부 곤충 종의 날개 앞쪽(앞쪽) 가장자리에 있는 어두운 색소 점입니다. 이 반점은 날개 끝 쪽에 위치하며 색상 때문에 종종 두드러집니다.

실험 결과 pterostigma는 날개 주변 부위보다 무거워서 활공할 때 곤충에게 도움이 된다는 것이 밝혀졌습니다. 특히 pterostigma는 날개 내부의 진동을 감소시킵니다.

 

pterostigma는 잠자리와 잠자리의 앞날개와 뒷날개에 나타납니다. 다른 곤충들도 앞날개에 편경관(pterostigmas)을 가지고 있는데, 예를 들어 일부 처벌목과 신경뇌목(neuroptera)이 있습니다.
